A .pptm extension file is a macro enabled open XML, Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation file. The presentation pages that are termed as slides comprise of text, images, videos, graphs and other components including media files that are required in a presentation. This feature is especially helpful to create presentations for the academic, marketing and business domains where a large amount of content needs to be stored. The advantage of using the .pptm extension as compared to .pptx is that macros can be executed in files with this extension whereas it is not possible to execute macros in .pptx files even if it has macros in it, apart from that both formats have similar features. Microsoft introduced the Open XML format for PowerPoint presentations in 2007 hence files with this extension cannot be opened with previous PowerPoint versions. However, if a Microsoft Compatibility Pack is installed along with the previous versions, it would be possible to open the files with .pptm extension.
PNG stands for portable network graphics. It is the raster graphics format associated with the .png filename extension. Unlike GIF format, the limitation of 256 colors does not hold with the PNG format. In fact this among other reasons was the motivation behind development of the PNG format to improve upon the GIF format. The PNG format however uses a single image format and thus does not support animations. Because the format was engineered to ease the distribution of graphic files across computer networks it is also not well suited for professional graphics.

The PPTM format combines the XML Architecture with the ZIP compression technology to reduce the file size. PPTM files can be converted to other formats that include PPT, PDF, PNG, PPTX or JPG. It can also be converted to a video format like MP4 or WMV. The recent additions to the presentations include features like inserting music that plays all through the presentation, sound effects to highlight specific slides, designing the presentation to play on its own just like a movie, recording the slide show with a pointer on one hand and narration on the other, repetition and shuffling the order of the slides as per requirement.
The PNG formation become a published ISO standard in 2004 as ISO/IEC 15948, although it was formally accepted for use by the internet engineering steering group in 1996. The PNG format has broad support for various color palettes including 24 bit RGB, 32 RGBA, and grayscale with optional support for transparency. The lossless data compression method used by PNG is DEFLATE.
