IMG .img extension file is usually a bitmap file. The image in this file can either be a graphic bitmap or a disc image. The .img extension is used by image files on the disk as well raw dumps of files from a magnetic or optical disc. The actual format of the contents of the files depends on the disk file system where the image is created. This is because the raw image comprises of a sector based binary copy of the source disk like FAT, NTFS, CD, DVD or Floppy Disk. Just like an ISO file, a physical copy of the disc is not required to be inserted in the CD-ROM drive to play the disc media as it can be done with the help of the .img file copied onto the computer if it contains an image of the disc.
JAR A .jar extension file is a Java Archive format file that is used to store a large number of files into one single file. The basic advantages of .jar extension files are data compression, archiving, decompression, unpacking of the archived file and electronic signing which is one of the advanced features of this format. The Java Development Kit (JDK) contains the Java Archive Tool that is used to perform the basic tasks on .jar extension files.
