The 3GP file format and its associated filename extension .3gp is an audio, video, and text container developed by the 3rd generation partnership project. The target market for the 3gp file format is 3G enabled UMTS mobile phones through associated UMTS multimedia services. Though mobile devices operating on high speed networks are the intended hardware associated with playing .3gp files, many PC codec packs exist which grant compatibility for .3gp playback. The format has a basic profile in which files of this format do not reference any external media sources and support for audio, video, and text is limited to a single track.
The OGG file format and .ogg file extension refer to the open source container format developed and maintained by the Xiph.Org Foundation. The format has been in development since the early 90's and initially was designed as an open format for audio compression. The 3gp format is standardized in the ETSI technical specification in which support for it is implied in IMS, MMS, PSS, and MBMS carrier services. The format is based upon the ISO/IEC 14496-12-MPEG-4 part 12 standard. As such, video streams in the 3gp format can be encoded in mpeg-4 part 2 or mpeg-4 part 10. Audio streams can be encoded in AMR- narrow band, AMR-wide band, AAC-LC and others.
Though OGG is versatile in the number of codecs it supports, typically only free codecs developed by the Xiph.org organization are used for encoding and decoding. From the lossy family of codecs, audio can be encoded using Speex, Vorbis, or Opus. Whereas Lossless or uncompressed encoding can be done using FLAC and OggPCM respectively.
